Large Rescue of 34 Cats

Our staff and volunteer large rescue team jumped into action last week to welcome 34 cats to Toronto.

These 34 rescues, who were mostly kittens, came to our Recovery Centre after a long, multi-hour drive from the Northern Ontario Region.

Our nimble team of volunteers quickly mobilized, with more than 10 pairs of hands on deck to help bring these little guys and gals into our program, and take them on to foster homes.

A large part of the group had been rescued from a hoarding type situation, and some required some additional treatment for the parasite ‘Giardia’, which causes severe gastrointestinal upset.

Almost all of the 34 cats were intact, and so Toronto Cat Rescue had to cover the costs of spaying and neutering them, which we do for every cat we rescue.

Some of them also needed dental surgery, including extractions, which we also cover the cost of.  Dental treatments are $1,000 on average per surgery - so it's not cheap!

This was a big rescue and our mighty team of volunteers rose to the challenge!  34 new cats are joining our growing rescue family and will soon be finding their way to their forever homes (reach out for this to be with you!)

While this is a great outcome for all felines and humans involved, we need to be serious about the situation and tackle it head on.

With cat season just starting, large rescues like this are about to become more and more frequent.  Soon shelters will be bursting at the seams, over capacity and with very limited space to take on more cats.

Toronto Cat Rescue is the last hope these cats have for a rescue transfer, and so we need to be prepared with the funds we need to save these lives.  The funds that pay for spaying and neutering, for expensive dental surgeries, and other unexpected treatment.

As a rescue we’re expecting to do many more transfers from Northern Ontario than in previous years.

Let’s celebrate our awesome team in their heroic large cat rescue!  34 cats rescued is no small feat, and it's thanks to our amazing volunteers that we can do what we do.

If you’re inspired by our work please consider helping us do it by donating, volunteering, adopting and more!
